OUR HISTORY BEGAN WITH A SPARK OF HOPE AND A VISION Alabama native Dr. David Satcher, the U.S. Surgeon General in two Presidents’ administrations, declared suicide prevention a national imperative and challenged every citizen to action. To assist our state in preventing suicide, the Alabama Department of Public Health, Mental Health, many concerned citizens, researchers, and clinicians formed the Alabama Suicide Prevention Task Force in 2001. Dozens of meetings later, and without a budget, a group of prevention advocates composed the State’s prevention plan, hosted suicide prevention coalition trainings, and participated in and hosted numerous suicide prevention community events. As a result, the ASPARC 501(c)3 non-profit organization was formed. ASPARC meetings are held every other month in the Birmingham area.
